Samsung Electronics Co. has successfully completed performance verification of its latest LPDDR5X chip on MediaTek’s upcoming Dimensity 9400 mobile application processor (AP) chipset. The new chip operates at an industry-leading speed of 10.7 gigabit-per-second (Gbps), setting a new benchmark in the mobile DRAM sector.
The validation was achieved using Samsung’s 16GB multi-package configuration, showcasing a significant leap in performance and capacity over previous generations. This advancement is expected to fortify Samsung’s position as a leader in the mobile chip market, especially in the fast-growing segment of mobile AI applications.
Samsung’s 10.7Gbps LPDDR5X chip improves performance by over 25% and capacity by more than 30% compared to its predecessors, while enhancing power efficiency by 25%. This results in longer battery life and superior on-device AI performance for mobile devices. The chip’s small size, enabled by 12-nanometer class processing technology, further solidifies Samsung’s technological leadership in the low-power DRAM market.
MediaTek, the world’s largest mobile AP manufacturer, plans to integrate Samsung’s LPDDR5X chip into its flagship Dimensity 9400 SoC, set for release later this year. This collaboration aims to leverage the chip’s high speed and efficiency to enhance AI functionality and overall mobile performance.
As the demand for faster, more efficient memory grows across various sectors, LPDDR DRAM is becoming a standard not only in smartphones but also in PCs, high-end computing, servers, and autonomous vehicles. On-device AI, which allows devices to perform AI computations independently, is a key area where LPDDR memory excels.
Market analysts forecast significant growth in the on-device AI market, with an average annual growth rate of 37% expected, reaching $173.9 billion by 2030. Samsung’s advancements in LPDDR5X DRAM are poised to play a crucial role in this expanding market.
In the competitive landscape, Samsung’s rival SK Hynix Inc. has also validated its advanced LPDDR5T chip on MediaTek’s platform, reflecting the industry’s shift towards high-performance, energy-efficient memory solutions. As generative AI smartphones gain market share, Samsung continues to collaborate actively with mobile AP design firms to meet the rising demand.
Samsung maintains its leadership in the mobile DRAM market with a 54.8% share as of Q1 2024, according to Omdia. The company’s ongoing innovation and customer collaboration aim to drive further growth in the AI-enabled mobile device sector.
