Samsung SDI unveiled its next-generation battery technologies at the IAA Transportation 2024 in Hanover, Germany, focusing on electric commercial vehicles. The new LFP+ (lithium iron phosphate) battery, designed for commercial use, offers a 10% higher energy density and can handle over 1,400 round trips between Hanover and Frankfurt, thanks to its improved lifespan. Additionally, the battery charges up to 80% in just 20 minutes, addressing the need for fast charging in long-range operations.
Samsung also showcased its All Solid-State Battery (ASB) and 46-phi cylindrical battery, both in development, with plans for mass production by 2027. The ASB promises industry-leading energy density, while the 46-phi battery, targeted for micro-mobility applications, will be launched in 2025.
As regulations tighten globally, the market for electric commercial vehicles is expected to grow rapidly, with Samsung positioning itself to lead in this expanding sector. The company is currently in discussions with multiple customers for mass production of its LFP+ battery.
