Samsung C&T Corp. is expanding into Europe’s nuclear power sector through a partnership with Sweden’s Karnfull Next AB, aiming to construct a small modular reactor by 2032. The South Korean construction firm joins the growing push to meet Sweden’s surging energy needs driven by data center developments from Microsoft Corp. and Amazon.com Inc.
The agreement marks Samsung C&T’s first venture into Europe’s nuclear power market as Sweden works to boost its nuclear capacity by 2,500 megawatts within the next decade. Karnfull Next has already completed initial site surveys in southeastern Sweden, where the proposed SMR facility would be located.
Under the memorandum of understanding, Samsung C&T will handle key aspects of the project including technology selection and environmental assessments. The reactor would primarily supply electricity to data centers in the region.
The partnership aligns with Sweden’s broader energy strategy to support its growing role as a data center hub. The country’s appeal to tech companies stems from its stable power grid, cool climate, and commitment to expanding nuclear capacity.
Neither company disclosed financial terms of the agreement. The project’s timeline suggests operations could begin just three years before Sweden’s target date for additional nuclear capacity.
