Nintendo is adding a Donkey Kong-themed area to its Super Nintendo World attraction in Osaka, expanding its non-gaming revenue streams as console sales slow.
The new zone, opening December 11 at Universal Studios Japan, features themed rides and attractions including Mine Cart Madness, interactive music areas, and exclusive merchandise outlets. The expansion comes as Nintendo seeks to diversify beyond its traditional gaming business.
The Kyoto-based gaming giant has recently lowered its operating profit forecast for the fiscal year ending March 2025, citing weakening sales of its aging Switch console. The company is increasingly looking to leverage its intellectual property through theme parks, movies, and merchandise.
Universal Studios Japan has emerged as a key partner in this strategy. The park ranked third globally in attendance last year, drawing 16 million visitors – a 29.6% increase from the previous year. The success has prompted international expansion, with similar Nintendo attractions already operating in Hollywood and planned for Orlando and Singapore.
The opening was delayed from spring for additional preparations, the park operator said. Creator Shigeru Miyamoto noted this marks a significant milestone for the Donkey Kong franchise, which began as an arcade game 40 years ago.
