Taiwan’s largest mobile chip designer MediaTek Inc. reported a 38.8% jump in 2024 profit to NT$107.1 billion (US$3.3 billion), driven by strong smartphone chip sales and expansion into artificial intelligence processors.
The chipmaker expects revenue to grow 2% to 10% in the first quarter from the previous three months to NT$140.8-151.8 billion, defying typical seasonal weakness. CEO Rick Tsai cited increased demand from Chinese smartphone makers benefiting from government subsidies, along with stronger orders for TV, Wi-Fi, tablet and Chromebook chips as customers stock up amid tariff uncertainties.
MediaTek is betting on generative AI to fuel its next phase of growth through edge computing and cloud applications. The company’s recently launched GB10 super chip marks its entry into the enterprise AI market, with more custom chips for edge AI and automotive use cases in development.
The Hsinchu-based firm posted full-year revenue of NT$530.6 billion in 2024, up 22.4% from 2023. Earnings per share reached NT$66.92, compared with NT$48.51 a year earlier. The company expects to maintain its gross margin at around 47% in the first quarter of 2025.
