LG Electronics Inc. plans to invest more than 1 trillion won ($762 million) in its webOS platform by 2027, signaling its ambition to transition from a leading home appliance maker to a platform-driven tech company. Unveiling its strategy at the webOS Summit 2024, LG outlined plans to enhance content offerings, expand the webOS ecosystem, and boost its advertising business.
Already powering millions of smart TVs globally, webOS is expected to generate over 1 trillion won in sales this year, a fourfold increase from 2021. The operating system holds an 11.7% share of the global TV market, behind Google’s Android TV and Samsung’s Tizen.
LG plans to tap into the fast-growing gaming sector, partnering with Nvidia and Amazon for cloud gaming services on webOS, and showcasing its first ultra-low latency Bluetooth controller. The company also aims to expand webOS Pay, its in-TV payment system, across Europe, with plans to roll it out in North America and South Korea.
Additionally, LG is pushing AI-based features like voice recognition and personalized content recommendations, while extending webOS beyond TVs to automotive systems, digital signage, and gaming monitors.
