Foxconn Interconnect Technology, a subsidiary of Taiwan’s Hon Hai Technology Group, has begun construction on an electric vehicle charging equipment factory in Saudi Arabia through its joint venture Smart Mobility.
The facility at King Salman Energy Park in Dammam is scheduled for completion in the third quarter of 2026, with production expected to begin in the fourth quarter of that year. FIT, which invested $50 million in the partnership with Saudi firm Saleh Suleiman Alrajhi & Sons when the joint venture agreement was signed in October 2024, will manufacture multiple EV charging hardware models at the site.
Smart Mobility said three of its charging products have already obtained Saudi Arabian Standards Organization certification, while its charging point management system is expected to enter commercial operation in the first half of 2026 following more than six months of field testing in the kingdom.
The project aligns with Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030 objective to have 30% of vehicles in Riyadh running on electricity by the end of the decade. The kingdom currently has limited charging infrastructure, with EVs accounting for only about 1% of vehicle sales despite growing consumer interest.
For FIT, which expanded into EV charging through its 2023 acquisition of German firm Prettl SWH and the 2024 purchase of Auto-Kabel Group, the Saudi plant represents an attempt to establish a foothold in a region betting heavily on electric mobility. The company also installed the first EV charging station at the energy park as a demonstration project.
