Doosan Enerbility Co. secured its first overseas gas turbine contract, signing an agreement to supply two 380-megawatt units to an unnamed U.S. technology company by the end of 2026, the Korean manufacturer said Monday. The company declined to identify the buyer or disclose financial terms.

The deal reflects surging demand from data center operators seeking dedicated power sources as artificial intelligence workloads strain electricity grids. Tech companies including Microsoft, Amazon and Google are increasingly turning to on-site gas generation to bypass lengthy grid connection wait times, creating opportunities for turbine makers.

South Korea became the fifth country to develop large-scale gas turbine technology in 2019, joining the U.S., Japan, Germany and Italy. Doosan’s entry into exports comes as established manufacturers like GE Vernova face backlogs extending beyond 2029 and plan to ramp production to 80 heavy-duty turbines annually.

The Korean manufacturer demonstrated its 380-megawatt H-class turbine through more than 15,000 operating hours at a domestic combined heat and power facility. The company has secured eight turbine contracts to date, mostly for the Korean market.

Doosan claimed 10% global market share in H-class turbine orders as of October 2024, though it remains a minor player in a market dominated by Western and Japanese competitors. The company faces the challenge of establishing service networks and proving reliability in international markets where competitors have decades of operational track records.
