CyberAgent Inc. is expanding its footprint in Japan’s booming animation industry by establishing a new studio subsidiary, CA Soa, marking the internet company’s latest move to capitalize on growing global demand for anime content.

The Tokyo-based company appointed Masakazu Ogawa, a veteran producer known for hit robot anime series like “Mobile Suit Gundam AGE” and “Gundam Build Fighters” at Bandai Namco Filmworks, to lead the new venture. The studio plans to open its office this spring in Nerima, Tokyo’s animation production hub.

The push into animation production follows CyberAgent’s earlier investments in the sector, including a joint anime fund with Cygames established in 2017. The company’s streaming platform AbemaTV has built a significant anime library, while original productions like “PRO-DUCE” and “Technoroid” have already hit the market.

The move comes as Japanese animation studios struggle to meet surging production demands driven by streaming platforms. By bringing animation capabilities in-house, CyberAgent aims to secure more control over its content pipeline, though industry experts note it may take several years before the new studio releases its first major productions.

Takahiro Yamauchi, CyberAgent’s senior executive officer and COO of AbemaTV, will join CA Soa’s board, suggesting close collaboration between the studio and the company’s existing media properties.
