Capcom has announced a significant milestone for its renowned Monster Hunter series, with cumulative global sales exceeding 100 million copies. This achievement underscores the series’ evolution into a global phenomenon, particularly following the immense success of “Monster Hunter: World,” which alone has contributed over 25 million copies to the total since its 2018 release.
The series, known for its thrilling hunting action gameplay against giant monsters in expansive natural settings, gained traction as a “national game” in Japan with its earlier portable versions. The success was propelled to new levels with “Monster Hunter: World,” which has consistently sold over 1 million copies annually for seven consecutive years, marking the highest sales in Capcom’s history.
Further expanding the franchise, Capcom launched “Monster Hunter Rise” in 2021 and its significant expansion, “Monster Hunter Rise: Sunbreak,” in 2022. These titles continued to boost the series’ profile, achieving combined annual sales of about 2 million copies, with “Rise” reaching 15 million units and “Sunbreak” 8 million units sold.
The series’ appeal extends beyond gaming, encompassing multimedia ventures such as themed merchandise and collaborative food and beverage products. Anticipation is already building for the next installment, “Monster Hunter Wilds,” set for a 2025 release, which contributed to the surge in series sales past the 100 million mark. This milestone not only celebrates Capcom’s enduring legacy but also sets the stage for continued growth in the franchise’s global fanbase and influence.
