Apple is set to incorporate LG Display as a secondary supplier for OLED screens in the iPhone SE4, launching next year, sources have revealed to TheElec. Traditionally, Apple has relied on BOE as the sole supplier for its budget-friendly iPhone SE series, which uses components from previous iPhone models while featuring an updated application processor to remain competitive in emerging markets such as India.
Next year, BOE will continue to be the primary supplier of OLED screens, while LG Display will primarily supply screens for legacy models. The iPhone SE4 will use OLED screens initially designed for the iPhone 13, simplifying production for display manufacturers.
Apple’s strategy of nurturing BOE as an OLED screen supplier aims to reduce dependency on Samsung Display and LG Display. However, BOE has struggled with large orders for iPhones in the past. The company faced challenges with the hole-display technology for the iPhone 15 and is also experiencing difficulties with OLED production for the iPhone 16, resulting in lower volumes compared to its South Korean competitors.
The integration of LG Display is expected to bolster Apple’s supply chain resilience, ensuring a stable supply of OLED screens for its budget models as it continues to expand its presence in price-sensitive markets.
