Korean cable maker Taihan Cable & Solution clinched a 100 billion won ($77 million) contract to upgrade high-voltage power infrastructure in Suffolk and Essex, marking its latest push into the UK market.
The South Korean cable manufacturer will supply 400kV cables and equipment for the power grid modernization project, working with British construction giant Balfour Beatty. The deal stems from a November partnership agreement where both companies aim to secure more than $220 million in transmission projects across the UK by 2030.
This represents Taihan’s third collaboration with Balfour Beatty since signing their memorandum of understanding. The company has been expanding its European footprint since 2017, when it opened its UK office. That operation evolved into its European headquarters in 2019, supported by branches in Denmark and Sweden, plus a Dutch subsidiary.
The contract follows Taihan’s earlier successes in Europe, including a 110 billion won project in Sweden and a 40 billion won UK grid upgrade. Company officials cited Europe’s increasing investment in power infrastructure, driven by carbon neutrality goals, as a key growth driver.
Taihan has previously completed projects in Germany and the Netherlands, as well as London’s major tunnel construction project LPT2. The company expects more opportunities as European nations upgrade their aging power networks.
