Suzuki Motor plans to introduce its first five-door Jimny model in Japan this April, marking a significant shift in the company’s domestic lineup with a vehicle manufactured in India.
The Jimny Nomade, produced at Maruti Suzuki’s Gurgaon plant near New Delhi, represents a growing trend of Japanese automakers importing Indian-made vehicles to their home market. This follows Suzuki’s October launch of the India-manufactured Fronx compact SUV in Japan.
Suzuki Motor President Toshihiro Suzuki said the decision to bring the five-door variant to Japan came after positive reception in international markets. The model, currently sold in 100 countries, features expanded rear seating and additional side doors, targeting families who found the three-door version impractical.
The move reflects Suzuki’s increasing reliance on its Indian manufacturing base, where annual production exceeded 2 million vehicles in 2024. The company aims to boost total capacity to 4 million units by 2030.
When questioned about quality concerns regarding Indian-made vehicles, Suzuki defended the manufacturing standards, noting no negative feedback from Japanese consumers about the imported Fronx model. The company began importing Indian-made vehicles to Japan in 2016 with the Baleno.
