South Korea’s BGF Retail, the operator behind the prominent CU convenience store chain, has officially extended its international footprint by inaugurating its first outlet in Kazakhstan. Situated in Almaty, Kazakhstan’s bustling metropolis, the new CU Astana Square store occupies a prime location on Tole bi street, an area renowned for its youthful vibrancy, fueled by nearby universities and an array of diverse offices.

This strategic expansion follows BGF Retail’s master franchise agreement with CU Central Asia, established by Shin-Line, a prominent Kazakh entity recognized as Central Asia’s leading ice cream producer, commanding a 40% market share. This partnership not only enables BGF Retail to leverage Shin-Line’s extensive local market expertise but also allows CU Central Asia to operate under the CU brand, thereby facilitating a fusion of South Korean retail innovation with Kazakhstani consumer preferences.

The alliance is emblematic of a broader trend where international convenience store chains are seeking growth in emerging markets, offering localized product assortments alongside universally popular items. Shin-Line’s existing dominance in the food sector, especially in producing ramen and dairy items, is expected to complement CU’s convenience store model, providing a tailored shopping experience that resonates with the local clientele and introduces a unique blend of Korean and regional products. This move signifies a significant step in CU’s global expansion strategy, aiming to tap into Kazakhstan’s growing retail sector and its dynamic consumer base.
