SK Telecom Co. plans to sell three subsidiaries to Samgu I&C as South Korea’s largest wireless carrier doubles down on telecommunications and artificial intelligence operations.
The Seoul-based company will divest SK Communications, which runs the Nate web portal and NateOn messaging service, along with F&U Credit Information and welfare provider SK M&Service. The financial terms weren’t disclosed.
The move comes as SK Telecom seeks to streamline its sprawling operations amid intensifying competition in Korea’s saturated telecom market. The carrier has been shifting resources toward emerging technologies like AI while maintaining its core mobile and internet services.
SK Communications has struggled to compete with dominant local platforms like Naver and Kakao. F&U Credit Information handles telecom billing and collections, while SK M&Service provides employee welfare programs through its PS&Marketing unit.
The company signaled its intention to concentrate investment in next-generation networks and AI development, areas where it faces mounting pressure from domestic rivals KT Corp. and LG Uplus Corp. South Korea’s early adoption of 5G technology has made it a key battleground for telecom innovation.
The deal is expected to help SK Telecom sharpen its focus as the industry transitions toward AI-driven services and advanced connectivity solutions.
