SK Telecom, South Korea’s leading mobile carrier, announced plans to open an artificial intelligence (AI) data center in Seoul this December, utilizing Nvidia’s powerful graphic processing units (GPUs). The project, in collaboration with U.S. GPU cloud provider Lambda, will convert an existing data center into a state-of-the-art AI facility, company officials confirmed on Wednesday.
The data center will initially launch with a substantial GPU capacity, with plans to expand to thousands of units over the next three years. This expansion aims to establish the facility as South Korea’s largest GPU farm, catering to the rapidly growing demand for AI-driven computing power.
In addition to hosting the AI data center, Lambda will open its first Asia-Pacific region in South Korea, further solidifying the country’s position as a regional AI hub. SK Telecom will also roll out a GPU-as-a-Service offering, leveraging Lambda’s GPU resources to provide flexible, high-performance computing options for businesses and developers.
SK Telecom’s investment in AI infrastructure is part of a broader strategy to expand its presence in the sector. Earlier this year, the company invested $20 million in Lambda and $200 million in AI data center solutions company Smart Global Holdings, underscoring its commitment to becoming a leader in AI technology.
