Sega Sammy Holdings is reaping rewards from its global expansion strategy, with two recent game releases each surpassing 1 million copies sold. The Japanese gaming giant’s “Metaphor: ReFantasio” and “Sonic x Shadow Generations” have exceeded initial sales projections, according to company executives.
“Metaphor: ReFantasio,” developed by Sega’s subsidiary Atlus, earned a 94 Metacritic score and garnered positive reviews from 90% of Steam users. The game’s success highlights how Atlus has benefited from Sega’s distribution network since its acquisition, enabling simultaneous worldwide releases across multiple platforms.
Sega is banking on additional sales momentum for “Sonic x Shadow Generations” when the franchise’s movie debuts in December. The game has already secured an 80 Metacritic score, with 97% positive Steam reviews.
The company’s marketing strategy focused heavily on Asian game shows and influencer partnerships. This approach marks a shift from Atlus’s previous regional-focused releases, demonstrating Sega’s ability to transform niche developers into global players.
The gaming conglomerate is further expanding its portfolio with “Sonic Rumble,” a free-to-play title developed in partnership with Rovio, and plans to release another Sonic film titled “Tokyo Mission” by year-end.
