Samsung Heavy Industries Co. clinched a 1.1 trillion won ($841 million) deal to build four container vessels for an unnamed Asian shipping company, bolstering its order book as global demand for eco-friendly ships rises.
The South Korean shipbuilder will construct four 16,000 TEU vessels, with delivery scheduled through December 2027. The contract adds to Samsung Heavy’s growing portfolio of 33 vessels secured this year, valued at $6.8 billion.
The latest order strengthens the company’s position in the container ship segment, complementing its existing backlog of 22 LNG carriers and various other vessel types. Samsung Heavy has now achieved 70% of its $9.7 billion annual target.
Maritime industry researcher Clarkson forecasts steady demand for large container vessels, projecting orders for about 53 ships of 12,000 TEU or larger annually through 2027. This surge is driven by shipping companies replacing aging fleets to meet stricter environmental regulations.
Samsung Heavy is betting on continued growth in orders for LNG carriers and floating production facilities, sectors where the company claims technological advantages over competitors.
