Samsung Display has created its most advanced OLED panel yet for Apple’s upcoming foldable iPhone, according to online leaks. The panel reportedly hasn’t been used even in Samsung’s own smartphones.
The new display technology integrates the touchscreen layer directly within the OLED panel, reducing thickness by 19% compared to panels used in existing Galaxy Z Fold devices. Samsung has also reportedly improved both peak and typical brightness levels to meet Apple’s specifications.
Sources claim the panel feels similar to conventional smartphone displays, with the folding crease—a persistent issue in foldable devices—being nearly imperceptible. Apple has reportedly applied for new branding trademarks for this display technology, potentially adding to its lineup of marketing terms like Retina and ProMotion.
A similar, though not identical, panel could appear in Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold 7, expected to launch in July. That device is rumored to measure just 3.9mm when unfolded and 8.9mm when folded—significantly thinner than the Galaxy Z Fold Special Edition (4.9mm and 10.6mm, respectively).
The collaboration highlights Samsung Display’s continued dominance in advanced OLED technology, even as it supplies key components to its parent company’s chief smartphone competitor.
