Orion Corp., a leading South Korean confectionery company, announced on Monday its enhanced collaboration with Vietnam’s Institute of Agro-Biology, part of the Vietnam National University of Agriculture, to develop new potato seed varieties. This partnership, initiated in January, focuses on creating high-quality potato seeds tailored to the Vietnamese climate.
Last week, the institute’s director and researchers visited Orion’s facilities in South Korea, including the Potato Research Institute in Pyeongchang County, Gangwon Province. During their visit, they discussed breeding new potato varieties and establishing a robust supply system. The delegation also inspected the production lines for Poca Chips and Swing Chips at Orion’s Cheongju factory, reviewing the potato receiving, storage, and quality control systems.
Orion, which founded its Potato Research Institute in 1988, has a history of collaborating with China and Vietnam on potato variety development. The company has successfully developed four new potato varieties and operates a comprehensive raw material supply system. Since 2016, Orion has been exporting seed potatoes to Vietnam, with exports of the Jinseo seed potato tripling compared to the previous year. This strengthened collaboration aims to further enhance potato cultivation and production capabilities in Vietnam.
