LS Cable & System is broadening its offshore wind power operations through a coordinated expansion across five subsidiaries, positioning itself to capitalize on South Korea’s renewable energy initiatives.
Starting with LS Materials’ shareholder meeting on March 24, the cable manufacturer will begin incorporating “investment, operation, and technology development in offshore wind power and energy-related businesses” into its business objectives across its network of subsidiaries, which includes Gaon Cable, LS Eco Energy, LS Materials, and LS Marine Solution.
The company cites South Korea’s Offshore Wind Power Special Act and the West Coast Energy Highway project as catalysts for its strategic shift. Its expansion leverages the firm’s experience as a domestic leader in high-voltage direct current submarine transmission networks.
Each subsidiary will target specific segments of the value chain: LS Materials will supply ultracapacitors for wind turbine pitch control systems and grid stabilization technology; Gaon Cable and LS Eco Energy will focus on submarine cable production; while LS Marine Solution will expand its fleet operations for offshore installations.
The move aligns with South Korea’s accelerating transition toward renewable energy as the country works to reduce carbon emissions and build a more sustainable power system. The government’s offshore wind initiatives create an opportunity for domestic suppliers to establish stronger market positions in the growing sector.
