LG Energy Solution’s in-house company, AVEL, has launched South Korea’s first grid-connected energy storage system (ESS) power plant, aiming to enhance renewable energy integration. The 6.3 megawatt-hour (MWh) facility, located in Seogwipo, Jeju Island, can power 600 households for a day and is designed to store excess energy from renewable sources for distribution when needed.
The plant addresses the challenge of renewable energy supply volatility by using ESS and grid integration technologies to maintain a steady electricity supply. AVEL, which was launched in late 2022, has been focused on securing permits, developing technology, and acquiring sites to support the project.
In conjunction with the plant’s launch, AVEL signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Korea Electric Power Corp. (KEPCO) to collaborate on advancing ESS technologies and exploring new business models. The completion of this facility represents a major milestone for AVEL as it continues to push forward innovations in energy storage and grid management.
