LG Electronics Inc. introduced its new service robot, CLOi GuideBot, integrated with Google’s advanced multimodal AI model, Gemini, at the Google Cloud Summit Seoul 2024. This collaboration marks LG’s entry into the generative AI robot market, showcasing the potential of combining innovative AI technologies with practical robotics.

The CLOi GuideBot, equipped with Gemini AI features, is designed for use in diverse environments such as airports, hospitals, restaurants, and smart factories. Scheduled for market release later this year, the robot represents LG’s first foray into generative AI, demonstrating enhanced communication capabilities and the ability to provide natural, accurate responses to unexpected questions. Additionally, CLOi can create desired photo backgrounds through voice commands, showcasing its versatility.

Gemini, Google’s AI chatbot launched last year to rival OpenAI’s ChatGPT, brings multimodal performance to CLOi, allowing the robot to process and respond to commands delivered in text, voice, image, and coding formats. LG plans to upgrade existing robot models via wireless software updates to incorporate these advanced AI features.

“CLOi embodies our AI vision of Affectionate Intelligence,” LG stated, emphasizing the company’s commitment to evolving robots to perform more creative and complex tasks. Service robots, which must interact closely with customers and analyze their environments in real time, require cutting-edge AI technology and expertise.

The global AI robot market is projected to grow at an average annual rate of 25%, reaching $64.35 billion by 2030, according to Statista. LG Electronics aims to capitalize on this growth by transforming from a traditional home appliance manufacturer into a platform-based tech giant focused on business-to-business services.

With the launch of the CLOi GuideBot, LG Electronics is set to enhance its role in the rapidly evolving AI robot sector, leveraging its partnership with Google to deliver innovative solutions across various industries.
