LG Display Co., the leading manufacturer of OLED TV panels, is advancing its Tandem OLED technology to maintain its competitive edge amid increasing demand for AI-powered computing. On Monday, the South Korean company announced the mass production of 13-inch Tandem OLED displays for laptops, a first in the industry.

Tandem OLED technology involves stacking multiple OLED panels, a design LG Display initially introduced in 2019 for automotive screens. This new application for laptops features two stacked OLED panels, delivering three times the brightness of standard single-layer OLED screens while ensuring energy is distributed effectively across the diodes for greater stability and double the lifespan.

These new Tandem OLED laptop screens consume up to 40% less power than conventional OLED screens, making them ideal for high-performance IT devices, including AI-powered laptops. Additionally, the screens are about 40% thinner and 28% lighter than their single-layer counterparts.

With two emissive layers, the Tandem OLED displays emit light through numerous red, green, and blue OLEDs when electrified, providing superior brightness and energy efficiency. As AI computing becomes more prevalent, LG Display aims to bolster its position in the IT OLED market.

Market research firm Omdia forecasts Tandem OLED display shipments to rise from 8.1 million units in 2024 to 71.8 million by 2031, with market value growing from $2.5 billion to $9.9 billion. LG Display’s strategic shift from LCD to OLED technology positions it well against its Chinese competitors.
