South Korea’s Gravity Co. won approval to release its mobile game Ragnarok: Rebirth in China, scoring its third regulatory green light in the country this year for titles based on its flagship franchise.
The game developer received the license from China’s National Press and Publication Administration, which included the title in its latest batch of foreign game approvals released on December 24. The 3D mobile role-playing game has already proven successful in Southeast Asia, leading download charts in Thailand, Philippines, Indonesia and Malaysia.
This marks another win for Gravity in China’s tightly regulated gaming market, following approvals for “Ragnarok Online” in February and “Ragnarok: Dawn” in June. The company plans to leverage its regional subsidiaries to localize the game for Chinese users.
The title features both vertical and horizontal screen orientations, along with systems for marketplace trading, equipment enhancement and pet collection. After its Southeast Asian success, the game also performed strongly in Taiwan, Hong Kong and Macau, reaching top revenue positions on major app stores.
The original Ragnarok franchise, inspired by Norse mythology, has built a global following since its 2002 debut. China’s gaming market remains heavily regulated, requiring foreign developers to secure NPPA approval before distribution.
