CJ CheilJedang Corp. is strengthening its foothold in Australia’s retail market by introducing its Bibigo brand products to Coles supermarkets, marking its latest push to dominate the country’s Korean food segment.
The deal with Coles, Australia’s second-largest grocery chain, follows the company’s existing partnership with market leader Woolworths. The expansion will bring seven Bibigo products to Australian shoppers, including three varieties of dumplings, rice balls, and street food items like fish-shaped pastries and hot dogs.
The Seoul-based food manufacturer is capitalizing on rising Australian consumer interest in Korean cuisine. By early 2025, the company plans to add IGA stores to its distribution network, which would give it access to more than 70% of Australia’s grocery market through over 3,000 retail locations.
While CJ CheilJedang portrays the expansion as a strategic success, industry analysts note that the company faces increasing competition in Australia’s growing Asian food sector, where Japanese and Chinese brands have already established strong positions.
The Australian push is part of CJ CheilJedang’s broader strategy to expand its presence in Oceania, where it already operates through various retail partnerships in New Zealand, including chains like New World and Pak’nSave.
