Hyundai Rotem secured a 415 billion won ($296 million) contract to supply urban railways for Taiwan’s Taichung Blue Line, extending its footprint in the Taiwanese transportation market. The deal, part of a larger consortium with France’s Alstom Transport and Singapore’s ST Engineering, was confirmed Sunday via Taiwan’s Financial Supervisory Service disclosure system.
The Korean manufacturer will handle railway supply within the turnkey contract, which encompasses vehicles, communications and fare collection systems for the metro project. The agreement represents a significant portion of Taichung’s broader urban development initiative, with the total project valued at approximately 2.6 trillion won.
Taiwan’s Ministry of Transportation and Communications approved the Blue Line proposal in January 2024. The project is expected to take a decade to complete at a cost of NT$161.51 billion, with NT$67.56 billion funded by Taiwan’s Executive Yuan.
This isn’t Hyundai Rotem’s first venture in Taiwan’s transit sector. The company previously delivered on the Taoyuan Airport MRT supply project, completing that contract three months ahead of schedule last December.
Hyundai Rotem has built a substantial international portfolio, providing railway systems across multiple markets including Australia, Hong Kong, Canada, and India. The latest contract reinforces its growing reputation in Asia’s competitive transportation infrastructure sector.
