Hyundai Rotem delivered its first autonomous light rail vehicle to Taiwan’s Taoyuan City, expanding its footprint in the island’s transportation infrastructure projects. The two-car train arrived three months ahead of schedule at the Green Line depot.
The rail project, awarded to the South Korean manufacturer in 2018, includes an 80-car fleet that will connect downtown Taoyuan with the city’s international airport. The automated system features the company’s proprietary train monitoring technology and can reach speeds of 80 kilometers per hour.
The delivery marks Hyundai Rotem’s fourth major contract in Taiwan. The company completed a 520-car order for Taiwan Railways Administration in 2023 and secured contracts for Kaohsiung and Taipei metro systems.
Taoyuan Mayor Chang San-cheng attended the unveiling ceremony with Hyundai Rotem President Lee Yong-bae. Lee said the company would focus on quality control and timely delivery of the remaining cars.
The new light rail vehicles include designated seating for pregnant women with pink lighting indicators and wheelchair-accessible spaces. The Green Line is scheduled to begin operations in 2029 as part of Taoyuan’s urban transit expansion.
