Hanwha Aerospace Co. has signed a $280 million contract with Poland’s Huta Stalowa Wola S.A. to supply chassis components and powerpacks for 87 Krab self-propelled howitzers, extending a decade-long industrial partnership between the companies.

The agreement, signed April 7 at HSW’s headquarters in Stalowa Wola, marks the third such deal between the firms following earlier arrangements in 2014 and 2023. Hanwha will deliver the components between 2026 and 2028.

The contract deepens collaboration on the Krab platform, which combines a 155mm/52-caliber NATO-compatible howitzer manufactured in Poland with a chassis derived from Hanwha’s K9 Thunder artillery system. The integration began in 2015 after initial Polish-designed chassis proved unreliable.

Poland has accelerated artillery modernization following its donation of 54 Krab units to Ukraine. The country is currently receiving deliveries under three separate contracts signed in 2016, 2022, and 2024.

Hanwha Aerospace CEO Jaeil Son said the deal represents “a strong example of our efforts to expand and diversify defense cooperation with Poland.” The South Korean firm is also pursuing additional contracts aligned with a framework agreement signed in 2022.

The defense partnership has expanded beyond the Krab system. In May 2024, the companies signed a letter of intent exploring potential use of Polish-built chassis for Hanwha’s K9A2 and K9A3 variants, and collaboration on the Homar-K multiple rocket launcher program.

Hanwha shares gained 0.9% in Seoul trading following the announcement.
