Hanwha Ocean held an Industry Day in Gdansk on May 21, presenting comprehensive collaboration plans with Polish industries for the Orka submarine acquisition project. The event at Gdansk Science and Technology Park included representatives from Hanwha Ocean’s partners, such as Hanwha Systems, Hyosung Heavy Industries, and Babcock International Group, highlighting their roles in the development of the KSS-III submarine for the Korean Navy.

The event aimed to explore collaboration opportunities between Hanwha Ocean, its partners, and Polish enterprises for the Orka project. Retired Vice Admiral Steve SK Jeong, Vice President of Hanwha Ocean, emphasized the potential for long-term partnerships and technological transfers to enhance Poland’s naval defense capabilities.

Hanwha Ocean showcased its Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul (MRO) capabilities and Technology Transfer (TOT) plans, offering to support the Polish Navy’s goal of domestic submarine maintenance. The TOT includes essential technologies, licenses, and intellectual property to enable Polish companies to manufacture and maintain submarine parts independently. Hanwha Ocean plans to establish an MRO Support Center in Poland for ongoing support and knowledge sharing.

The collaboration is expected to boost Poland’s defense capabilities, foster workforce development, and drive economic growth. Hanwha Ocean also plans to partner with Polish universities and research institutions to develop naval ships and systems tailored to Polish needs.

The KSS-III submarines, designed to meet South Korea’s strategic needs amid regional tensions, offer advanced technology in stealth, propulsion, and weaponry. These submarines, delivered to the Korean Navy between 2021 and 2024, have enhanced South Korea’s naval capabilities and solidified Hanwha Ocean’s reputation in advanced submarine construction.

If selected by the Polish Ministry of National Defense, Hanwha Ocean can deliver the submarines within six years, leveraging Korea’s shipbuilding expertise and efficient project management. The KSS-III submarines, equipped with cutting-edge technology, are designed for versatile operations in various maritime environments, ensuring robust defense capabilities for Poland.
