Flexell Space, an in-house venture of Hanwha Systems, has signed a letter of intent with Airbus Defence and Space GmbH to develop next-generation space solar cell modules. This partnership will leverage Flexell’s tandem solar cell technology, combining CIGS and Perovskite materials, to create solar cells that are more efficient and significantly lighter than current models.
The new technology promises to revolutionize space solar cells by reducing their weight by more than half while increasing efficiency beyond the current 20-30% range. Flexell’s solar cells are also designed to be flexible, capable of being rolled out like a scroll, making them adaptable to various satellite surfaces, including small and curved areas.
This collaboration marks a major step forward in space technology, as the aerospace industry continues to seek more efficient and cost-effective energy solutions. The innovative tandem solar cells are expected to play a crucial role in powering satellites and spacecraft, contributing to the rapid growth of the space industry.
