EVA Airways Corp. has placed Taiwan’s largest aircraft order, committing to 33 new Airbus SE jets in a multibillion-dollar deal. The purchase, announced in December 2023, includes 18 A350-1000 wide-body aircraft and 15 A321neo narrow-body planes, set for delivery from 2027 and 2029, respectively.
EVA Air’s President Chia-Ming Sun cited operational challenges on North American routes as a key factor in choosing the A350-1000. The aircraft’s 25% improved fuel efficiency addresses issues stemming from longer flight paths that avoid Russian airspace and headwinds on return trips.
This move aligns with the aviation industry’s push towards net-zero carbon emissions. Airbus CEO of the Commercial Aircraft business Christian Schere noted that his company now holds over 60% market share for aircraft with 100+ seats among Taiwanese airlines. Schere also highlighted Airbus’s commitment to enabling all its aircraft to operate on 100% sustainable aviation fuel by 2030.
EVA Air plans to gradually increase its use of sustainable aviation fuel, targeting 10% by 2035 and 65% by 2050, as part of its strategy to achieve net-zero emissions by mid-century.
