Drecom Co. returned to profitability in the third quarter as its new mobile game “Wizardry Variants Daphne” generated ¥2.16 billion ($14.1 million) in revenue despite technical issues that hampered its full operation.
The Tokyo-based gaming company reported sales of ¥4.18 billion for the October-December period, more than doubling from the previous quarter. Operating profit reached ¥288 million, reversing a ¥247 million loss in the second quarter.
President Yuki Naito attributed the game’s success to its unique approach that contradicts mobile gaming norms. “We’re providing a one-of-a-kind experience by deliberately creating high difficulty levels,” Naito said, noting that players have formed active communities on social media to share strategies.
The company expects fourth-quarter revenue to increase 10.2% to ¥5.3 billion as “Wizardry Daphne” transitions to normal operations with regular character and event additions. Drecom plans to expand the title to Steam for PC players and strengthen overseas marketing.
Drecom will also launch “Disney STEP,” a real-life treasure hunt game using Disney IP, in Japan, Korea, Taiwan, Hong Kong, and Macau this quarter.
The company is diversifying beyond mobile games with anime adaptations of its original properties and blockchain initiatives, as it repositions itself as a global entertainment content provider leveraging IP and technology.
