Dongkuk Coated Metal Co., a unit of South Korean steel conglomerate Dongkuk Holdings Co., has developed what it calls the world’s first biodegradable film for color-coated steel sheets. The innovation comes after a year-long collaboration with KB Chem Co., a local film coating specialist.
The new technology allows microorganisms to naturally break down the eco-friendly product at room temperature. Dongkuk CM states that users can tailor the decomposition period between six months and five years by adjusting the microorganism content, potentially catering to various industrial needs.
This development follows Dongkuk CM’s introduction of recycled color-coated steel sheets last November. The company plans to combine these technologies to produce more environmentally conscious products.
While Dongkuk CM touts the potential of its new film, independent verification of its claims and environmental impact remains to be seen. The firm is reportedly considering supplying the coated steel sheets to LG Electronics Inc. for use in clothes dryers, pending production verification tests this month.
The move comes as steel manufacturers face increasing pressure to reduce their environmental footprint and develop more sustainable products.
