Daewoo Engineering & Construction Co. (Daewoo E&C) has successfully completed the construction of the Mumbai Trans Harbour Link, now recognized as India’s longest sea bridge. This major infrastructure project, a collaborative effort with Tata Projects Limited, part of India’s Tata Group, spanned approximately 69 months to reach completion.

The Mumbai Trans Harbour Link, extending 21.8 kilometers, is a critical development in India’s infrastructure landscape. Daewoo E&C’s role in this monumental project involved constructing the most challenging segment of the bridge, a 7.8-kilometer stretch across the sea, along with an interchange.

In their construction approach, Daewoo E&C employed the precast segment method (PSM), a strategy designed to minimize environmental disruption. This method involves creating prefabricated bridge segments off-site and then transporting them to the construction area for assembly. This approach significantly reduced the potential for damage to the nearby mangrove forests and mitigated marine pollution risks.

Despite facing considerable hurdles, including the global COVID-19 pandemic and unusual weather conditions, which caused delays in material supplies and construction schedules, Daewoo E&C successfully navigated these challenges to complete the project.

The opening of the Mumbai Trans Harbour Link is a significant development for the region, drastically reducing the travel time between Mumbai and Navi Mumbai. What previously took two hours will now be a mere 30-minute journey, substantially improving the logistics and transportation conditions in one of India’s most bustling metropolitan areas. This bridge is not only a feat of engineering but also a pivotal link that promises to transform the connectivity and economic landscape of the region.
