CJ CheilJedang Corp., a major South Korean conglomerate, has made a significant advancement in sustainable packaging by developing a new material made entirely from the biodegradable polymer, polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHAs). This innovative move marks a shift away from conventional plastic packaging materials like polyvinyl chloride (PVC), widely used but environmentally detrimental.

PHAs are naturally occurring polymers that microorganisms produce and can decompose in various environments, including soil and oceans. This property makes PHA an ideal candidate for eco-friendly packaging solutions. CJ CheilJedang’s new material not only aligns with environmental sustainability goals but also maintains the practical qualities of regular plastics. It is durable enough to handle heavy or sharp-edged items, making it suitable for a wide range of shipping needs.

A notable feature of this material is its opacity, which ensures the contents remain concealed. Additionally, its adhesive properties effectively prevent shipping labels from detaching, addressing a common issue in logistics.

The company has already implemented this sustainable packaging for “Dream Delivery Today,” the same-day delivery service offered by its subsidiary, CJ Olive Young. Currently in use at two logistics centers in Gyeonggi Province for Onul Drim deliveries, there are considerations for expanding its usage. This development represents CJ CheilJedang’s commitment to reducing the environmental impact of packaging, setting a new standard in the industry for sustainability and innovation.
