Toyota, in collaboration with Mitsubishi Heavy Industries and the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA), is set to revolutionize lunar surface exploration with the development of the Lunar Cruiser. Slated for operation by 2031, this innovative vehicle is designed to support astronauts directly on the moon’s surface, functioning akin to a “camping car” with internal controlled air pressure allowing for habitation without spacesuits.

This initiative is part of the broader Artemis project, led by NASA, which also includes ambitious plans to send Japanese astronauts to the moon, potentially as early as 2028. These efforts underscore a significant international partnership, particularly following a strategic Washington summit between Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida and U.S. President Joe Biden, affirming deeper cooperation in space exploration.

The Lunar Cruiser promises mobility for up to 20 kilometers per day across the moon’s terrain and is equipped with technology for extensive lunar resource surveying near the south pole. This capability is pivotal for long-term lunar missions focusing on in-situ resource utilization.

Japan’s commitment to the Artemis program positions it as a key player in the nascent lunar economy, which experts like PwC estimate could grow to $170 billion by 2040. This venture not only enhances scientific and technological collaboration between Japan and the U.S. but also strategically positions Japan in the evolving landscape of space exploration and economic exploitation of lunar resources.
