MediaTek Inc. launched its latest Dimensity 8400 mobile processor, intensifying competition in the high-end smartphone chip market as artificial intelligence capabilities become a key battleground for manufacturers.
The Taiwanese chipmaker’s new 5G processor features eight Arm Cortex-A725 cores running at speeds up to 3.25GHz, delivering a 41% boost in multi-core performance while reducing power consumption by 44% compared to its predecessor. The company says its integrated NPU 880 AI processor can handle various AI models, including large language models and multimodal applications.
The chip includes upgraded graphics capabilities with an Arm Mali-G720 GPU that offers 24% better performance at 42% lower power consumption. MediaTek also enhanced the image processing with its Imagiq 1080 ISP, supporting features like QPD zoom and full-range HDR for video creation.
On the connectivity front, the Dimensity 8400 provides 5G speeds up to 5.17Gbps through triple carrier aggregation. The chip supports displays up to 144Hz WQHD+ resolution and dual-screen folding devices.
While MediaTek positions the chip as a flagship-grade processor, it faces stiff competition from Qualcomm Inc. and Samsung Electronics Co., which have already established strong positions in the premium smartphone segment.
