On July 11, 2024, KADOKAWA Group announced its acquisition of Doga Kobo, the esteemed animation studio known for producing the popular anime series “Oshi no Ko.” While the specific percentage of shares and the transfer amount remain undisclosed, this strategic move is set to strengthen KADOKAWA’s foothold in the anime production industry.

Founded in 1973, Doga Kobo is a mid-sized studio with over 50 years of experience and 62 employees. The studio has earned a reputation for its meticulous animation quality and has been the driving force behind hit series such as “Yuru Yuri,” “Monthly Girls’ Nozaki-kun,” and “NEW GAME!”. Doga Kobo’s relationship with KADOKAWA is well-established, particularly highlighted by the success of “Oshi no Ko,” where KADOKAWA served as the lead producer.

KADOKAWA has identified the global expansion of its entertainment offerings as a core growth strategy, with anime production playing a pivotal role. Historically, KADOKAWA was a major player in anime production without an in-house studio. However, recent years have seen a strategic pivot, marked by the establishment of ENGI in 2018, investments in Kinema Citrus in 2019, and the creation of Studio KADAN in 2021. The acquisition of Doga Kobo brings the number of KADOKAWA’s animation studios to six, including the newly launched Raging Bull and Bellnox Films in 2024.

This consolidation effort comes at a time when the industry faces a shortage of animation production talent and capable studios. By integrating Doga Kobo, KADOKAWA aims to solidify its production capabilities and secure a competitive edge in the market.

The trend of major companies acquiring animation studios is accelerating, driven by the need to control production pipelines. Earlier in 2024, Bandai Namco Filmworks acquired 8bit, known for “Blue Lock,” and Toho acquired Science SARU, acclaimed for its innovative works. These moves reflect a broader industry shift towards the integration of planning, production, and distribution of anime content.

KADOKAWA’s acquisition of Doga Kobo is a significant step in its strategy to enhance its production infrastructure and expand its influence in the global anime market.
