Japan’s anime industry reached a new milestone as global market size surged to ¥3.3 trillion ($22.3 billion) in 2023, marking the third consecutive year of record-breaking performance, according to the Association of Japanese Animation.
The market expanded by 14.3% from ¥2.9 trillion in 2022, significantly outpacing the previous year’s 6.8% growth. The acceleration was primarily driven by increasing international demand and streaming platform revenues, while the weakened yen amplified overseas earnings when converted to the Japanese currency.
The industry group, established in 2002, tracks both the broader anime market, which includes licensing and merchandise, and the core animation production sector. The findings will be published in the association’s annual Anime Industry Report, set for release on December 13.
The 120-page report, priced at ¥22,000 ($148), will detail market trends across various segments including TV series, theatrical releases, video packages, and streaming services. The association plans to host a seminar in Tokyo’s Ikebukuro district on December 20 to discuss the findings.
