Foxconn is expanding its presence in augmented reality technology with plans to establish a MicroLED production facility in Taichung, Taiwan, deepening its partnership with UK-based Porotech.
The Taiwan manufacturing giant aims to begin mass production of MicroLED wafers by the fourth quarter of 2025, targeting global AR device makers. The move follows the companies’ initial collaboration in 2023, which focused on developing microdisplays for AR applications.
The partnership combines Porotech’s Gallium Nitride technology with Foxconn’s manufacturing capabilities in wafer processing, packaging, and optical modules. Foxconn’s S Business Group general manager Bob Chen said the company is advancing toward mass production after achieving high brightness levels in their uLED development last year.
Industry researcher TrendForce projects MicroLED chip revenue to reach $39 million in 2024, primarily from large displays. The sector could expand significantly to $489 million by 2028, driven by automotive displays and AR glasses applications.
The investment marks Foxconn’s latest attempt to diversify beyond its core business of assembling consumer electronics for companies like Apple. However, the success of this venture will depend on the company’s ability to overcome technical challenges in mass production and secure orders from major AR device manufacturers.
