South Korea’s Taihan Cable & Solution Co. has secured a contract worth 90 billion won ($67.7 million) to supply cables for a high-voltage direct current (HVDC) and high-voltage alternating current (HVAC) project in California. Commissioned by LS Power Grid California, the project will serve areas like San Jose and Silicon Valley, where power demand has surged due to growth in artificial intelligence (AI) and advanced IT industries.
The project involves a 320kV HVDC and 500kV HVAC system, the latter being the highest voltage for commercially available AC underground cables. This deal marks Taihan Cable’s first foray into the U.S. HVDC market, a specialized segment crucial for long-distance, high-capacity power transmission.
The company credits its success to its established technical expertise from previous U.S. projects. Since 2017, Taihan has intensified efforts to penetrate the U.S. market, driven by growing demand to replace the aging power grid. With this contract, Taihan Cable further solidifies its position as a key player in the global high-voltage cable industry.
