Samsung Electronics has begun mass production of its PM9E1 solid-state drive (SSD), a PCIe 5.0 device designed for AI-capable PCs. The new SSD boasts industry-leading performance and capacity, built on Samsung’s proprietary 5nm controller and eighth-generation V-NAND technology.
The PM9E1 significantly outperforms its predecessor, the PM9A1a, in key areas including speed, storage, power efficiency, and security. With an eight-channel PCIe 5.0 interface, the drive achieves sequential read and write speeds of up to 14.5GB/s and 13GB/s respectively, more than doubling previous generation capabilities.
Samsung claims this enhanced performance enables the transfer of a 14GB large language model in under a second, catering to data-intensive AI applications. The SSD offers storage options ranging from 512GB to an industry-leading 4TB, targeting users handling large AI-generated content and high-resolution videos.
The drive’s 50% improvement in power efficiency aims to extend battery life for on-device AI applications. Samsung has also incorporated advanced security features to prevent supply chain attacks.
As AI-ready PCs gain traction, Samsung’s PM9E1 positions the company at the forefront of the evolving storage market for next-generation computing devices.
