Samsung Heavy Industries Co. has entered into an exclusive agreement with Norway’s Equinor to supply floating wind turbine substructures and marshalling services. This partnership aims to bolster Equinor’s bid for the Bandibuli offshore floating wind project off the coast of Ulsan, South Korea.

The Bandibuli project involves installing 50 units of 15-megawatt (MW) wind turbines, which would create the world’s largest offshore floating wind farm. South Korea plans to select a contractor for this ambitious project by the end of the year. If Equinor secures the contract, Samsung Heavy Industries will play a crucial role in supplying substructures for the turbines.

This agreement is part of ongoing collaboration discussions between Anders Opedal, Equinor’s CEO, and Choi Sungan, Samsung Heavy Industries’ Vice Chairman and CEO. The partnership builds on a strategic cooperation agreement signed in September 2022, which includes not only offshore wind power but also offshore oil and gas exploration.

Equinor has established Bandibuli Energy, a special purpose company, to advance its bid for the project. Samsung Heavy Industries’ innovative model for floating offshore wind power facilities positions it as a key player in the renewable energy sector, reinforcing South Korea’s commitment to sustainable energy solutions.
