Samsung Display plans to ramp up production of small and mid-sized OLED panels to 475.6 million units in 2025, betting on new revenue streams beyond its core smartphone business.
The South Korean display maker’s 10% planned increase from 2024’s expected output of 432.2 million units comes as growth in its main smartphone panel business faces headwinds. The company currently allocates more than 90% of its small and mid-sized OLED production to smartphone displays.
The most aggressive expansion targets foldable displays, with production set to jump 150% to 12.5 million units. The company also aims to boost IT rigid OLED output by 56% to 12.5 million units, targeting the tablet market where manufacturers are beginning to switch from LCD technology.
The strategy shift follows Samsung Electronics’ forecast of sub-1% growth in the global smartphone market for 2025. While Samsung Display has seen increased adoption in low to mid-range smartphones, the more profitable premium segment has shown modest growth.
The display maker also faces growing pressure in its Apple supply chain as the iPhone maker diversifies its OLED sourcing to include LG Display and BOE. Samsung Display’s panel shipments to Apple are expected to remain flat at about 130 million units next year.
