LS Cable & System, South Korean cable maker, finished South Korea’s first voltage-type HVDC project, building a 90-kilometer submarine power cable connecting the mainland to Jeju Island. The project, completed through a partnership with LS Marine Solution, advances the country’s push toward renewable energy integration.
The cable maker won the Korea Electric Power Corp. contract in 2020 after an international bidding process. The undersea power line links Wando County in South Jeolla Province to Jeju, boosting the island’s power reliability and renewable energy capacity.
This marks LS Cable’s second major submarine project for Jeju, following a similar installation in 2009. The company’s voltage-type HVDC technology enables two-way power transmission with minimal losses, critical for managing fluctuating renewable energy sources.
As South Korea’s sole producer of HVDC submarine cables, LS Cable aims to leverage this domestic success to expand globally. The technology’s ability to transmit high-capacity power over long distances with reduced environmental impact positions the company to compete in the growing international HVDC market.
