LG Energy Solution is rolling out new battery management software for electric vehicles, partnering with Qualcomm Technologies to integrate diagnostic capabilities into the chipmaker’s automotive platform.
The South Korean battery maker’s new system will run on Qualcomm’s Snapdragon Digital Chassis, marking a shift from traditional battery management systems that rely on basic hardware. The software leverages increased computing power to process vehicle data in real-time, enabling faster detection of potential thermal issues and more accurate battery life predictions.
LG Energy Solution says the new platform offers more than 80 times the processing capability of conventional systems. This allows for complex calculations to forecast battery capacity and component degradation that weren’t previously possible.
The move aligns with the company’s recent push into software services under its new B.around brand. LG Energy Solution claims its battery management expertise, backed by over 8,000 patents, achieves a safety diagnostic detection rate exceeding 90% and a degradation diagnostic error rate of about 1%.
The collaboration builds on an earlier agreement between the two companies to develop next-generation battery management solutions. The system will integrate with Qualcomm’s connected services platform, allowing automakers to access diagnostic data through their interface and cloud systems.
