KG Mobility has officially rolled out its autonomous taxi service, starting with the Korando EV, South Korea’s first nighttime autonomous taxi. The service launched in Gangnam-gu, Seoul, in collaboration with SWM, a specialist in autonomous driving technology. This initiative represents a critical step toward KG Mobility’s goal of achieving Level 4+ autonomous driving technology by 2030.

The initial phase of the service, running until May 2024, covers the Gangnam and Seocho areas. From May 2024, the second phase will extend coverage to additional districts, including Sinsa-dong and Samseong-dong. Unlike fixed-route autonomous buses, these taxis offer zone-based, passenger-specific destinations, requiring more sophisticated navigation technology.

KG Mobility’s approach reflects the growing trend of autonomous vehicle services, already commercialized in countries like the U.S. and China. The company is focusing on advancing safety features, such as fault response systems, as it gradually expands service areas and vehicle types, positioning itself at the forefront of South Korea’s autonomous driving efforts.
