Global chemical giants Ineos Group Ltd. and South Korea’s Hanwha Group have announced a joint initiative to explore the construction of a low-carbon ammonia facility in the United States. The facility aims to meet the increasing global demand for low-carbon ammonia by leveraging carbon sequestration technology.
Ineos Nitriles, a division of the British multinational conglomerate, and Hanwha Corp., the holding company of Hanwha Group, revealed plans to assess the feasibility of building a plant capable of producing over 1 million tons of low-carbon ammonia annually. The companies expect to make a final investment decision by 2026, with commercial operations slated to begin in 2030.
Kiwon Yang, CEO of Hanwha Corp.’s Global Division, emphasized the strategic importance of this collaboration, stating, “Our partnership with Ineos Nitriles aims to solidify our position in the global ammonia market and address the rising demand for clean ammonia solutions.”
Ineos Nitriles, the world’s leading producer of acrylonitrile, manufactures 1.3 million tons per year across three facilities located in the US and Germany. Acrylonitrile, essential for producing plastics and resins, is made through a process called ammoxidation, which combines ammonia, propylene, and air.
Hans Casier, CEO of Ineos Nitriles, highlighted the project’s significance for the company’s sustainability goals, noting, “This initiative is a critical contributor to Ineos Nitriles’ carbon emission reduction targets for 2030 and our net zero ambitions by 2050. It represents a significant step toward leading in the supply of low-carbon acrylonitrile, with low-carbon ammonia being a key raw material.”
As the demand for clean energy solutions grows, the collaboration between Ineos and Hanwha marks a pivotal move towards sustainable industrial practices and the advancement of low-carbon technologies.
