Taiwan’s GlobalWafers Co. won US government support for its semiconductor expansion plans, receiving up to $406 million in federal grants under the CHIPS Act. The funding will support the company’s $4 billion investment across facilities in Sherman, Texas, and St. Peters, Missouri.

The Commerce Department’s decision marks a significant boost for GlobalWafers’ ambitions to strengthen its foothold in the US semiconductor market. The funding package will help finance the construction of a 12-inch advanced silicon wafer facility in Texas and expand production of silicon-on-insulator wafers in Missouri.

This federal backing comes as the US pushes to reduce dependency on Asian chip suppliers and build a more resilient domestic semiconductor supply chain. GlobalWafers’ expansion aligns with Washington’s efforts to attract foreign investment in critical technology sectors.

The investment represents one of the largest Taiwanese semiconductor investments in the US manufacturing sector. The projects are expected to enhance America’s capability to produce advanced semiconductor materials, essential for everything from smartphones to electric vehicles.

The Commerce Department’s support underscores the growing competition among nations to secure critical semiconductor supply chains, as global demand for advanced chips continues to rise.
